So far, one of the only down sides to being in Florence, as opposed to New York City, is missing out on sweet New York functions. This past weekend was the opening of artist George Condo’s new exhibit, “Mental States,” at the New Museum. Condo combines styles of classicism, cubism, and pop art to create a markedly unique style that is both, as the old paradox goes, classic and modern. In a time when famous artists are no longer painters and sculptors, but rather graphic and product designers, Condo is one of the few traditional visual artists of notoriety.
I’ve been a fan of Condo’s work since first doing a report on him in high school, and was overjoyed to seem him get so much exposure in 2010 when he was commissioned to produce art for Old School Movie favorite Kanye West’s latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. In fact, West, along with designer Marc Jacobs, were some of the guests in attendance at the opening. “Mental States” is on display until May 8th at the New Museum in New York City, and if you haven’t checked out Condo yet, get on it!
