I have nothing but pride when it comes to being from the Bay Area, but when somebody asks me "Can you hyphy???" it's always a pretty good sign that I should never speak to them again. The Hyphy movement was undoubtedly a low, though very sweet point, in the Bay's history, one that resulted in most young men dressing monochromatically from head-to-toe. In fact, it took me about two years to start dressing in multiple colors again.
This week's jam is entitled "Boom Bap," off Bay Area MC Mistah F.A.B's, new mixtape, I Found My Backpack. A pioneer of the now deceased Hyphy movement, it is great to see F.A.B. return to a classic, in fact more east coast, hip hop sound. Dig on this track and the rest of Backpack, and if you can stand it, his older Hyphy tracks.
